European Precision in Space Testing – Nanovac and Plug In in Collaboration

Before a satellite reaches orbit, it must first prove that it can survive space conditions here on Earth. Thermal vacuum chambers simulate temperatures from –150 to +150 degrees Celsius, as well as vacuum and radiation – the extreme environment found in orbit. This is precisely where the collaboration between Nanovac AB of Sweden and Plug In of France comes into play.

Already at Space Tech Expo Europe 2024, the two companies demonstrated how precise European engineering works together when it comes to qualification and reliability in the space industry.

“We produce thermal vacuum test chambers and other vacuum chambers that are used in the space industry – from centimeters in diameter to several meters,” explained Thomas Engstedt, CEO of Nanovac AB. The company develops custom test systems for satellite components, materials, and propulsion systems. Whether outgassing, thermal cycling, or propulsion tests – each chamber is designed and manufactured according to customer-specific requirements.

A key element of these test systems is provided by Plug In, the French manufacturer of hermetic feedthroughs and connectors that ensure electrical, optical, or video transmission even under the toughest conditions. “We are a manufacturer of hermetic feedthroughs with epoxy sealing – a large range of connectors, optical fibers, or video cables,” said Guillaume Maini-Gastou, General Manager of Plug In.

Together, Nanovac and Plug In demonstrate how European specialization leads to robust and precise test solutions. The chamber on display contained a small test satellite – a tangible example of how space technologies are qualified under realistic conditions.

Looking ahead to Space Tech Expo Europe 2025, it becomes clear: such collaborations form the backbone of a strong and capable European space industry – from test systems and components to complete mission architectures.
