Harwins Backshells offer mechanical protection to connectors, particularly where the wires exit the connector. Constructing these backshells from metal also provides EMC/RFI shielding. Adding a metal braid around the cable assembly and attaching it to the rear ends of the backshells ensures full 360° EMC shielding across the entire cable assembly, as well as enhanced wear resistance throughout the cable harness. By installing metal backshells on the mating PCB or panel-mounted connectors, you achieve complete end-to-end shielding.
Our supplier Harwin offers a comprehensive range of backshells made from rugged aluminum alloy with electroless nickel plating. The aluminum provides a strong yet lightweight protective covering with excellent shielding properties due to its high conductivity and impressive strength-to-weight ratio. The nickel coating ensures corrosion resistance, addressing the common weakness of uncoated aluminum. Available in cable and board/panel mount configurations, these backshells are compatible with all major High-reliability (Hi-Rel) product ranges and meet the operating temperature requirements of the applicable product families. Additionally, some options can be incorporated later in the design process, even after complete assemblies have been manufactured.
Cables run through many different areas of a piece of equipment. In some of these areas through which the cables run, signals may be transmitted from the device or other sources that should not interfere with the signals from the cables or the cable bundles. Conversely, these areas might be prone to signals coming from the cable bundle itself. The backshells permanently protect both the cables and the surrounding areas from interference signals.
To achieve full end-to-end shielding, add shielding to the mating connectors at both ends of the cable harness. For enhanced shielding effectiveness, use PCB ground planes or attach grounding to the cable braid.
Through vibrations, cables can rub and wear against chassis or airframes, or even against the cable ties securing the harness. Adding a durable metal braid, properly anchored at both ends to the metal backshells, helps reduce or eliminate the risk of wiring short-circuits from exposed conductors.
