High-performance and highly reliable
Connection technology for the aerospace industry
With press-fit technology, connectors are pressed onto a printed circuit board (PCB) using appropriately dimensioned through-hole plating without damaging the PCB or the connectors. This technology is an alternative to the soldering process and offers numerous advantages over the conventional process, such as a reduction in production costs or a large selection of different power and signal contacts.
The low-force press-fit process from our supplier Positronic also prevents distortion of the PCB and damage to the hole due to the low insertion and extraction forces caused by bi-jump power. This expertise in the development and manufacture of press-fit contacts was demonstrated once again in 2018 when our supplier and the CNES (French space agency) were selected to lead a project to qualify SPMAX and DSUB with press-fit contact technology for the European Space Agency ESA.
Press-fit technology helps to improve the reliability of electronic assemblies
*FIT-Rate = Failure-in-Time-Rate
Failure rate is 100 times lower than with hand soldering
between the contact and the coated through hole
from the tip to the end - for straight and 90º contacts
Inserts can be repeated without any problems
to protect the contact and ensure high electrical perfomance
due to the compatible Press-Fit connection
and the coating through the compatible Press-Fit connection
High-performance, highly reliable and repeatable connection method with an interface resistance of less than a tenth of a milliohm. The use of fixing screws is recommended to separate the electrical connection from the mechanical connection of the system.
Almost obsolete technology used in low-cost applications that are insensitive to shocks and vibrations and are not expected to have a long service life.
Mainstream technology with high adaptability for mass applications that require high production throughput. Generally applicable for stamped and molded contact technology with tin plating on the contacts and on the PCB.
Gas-tight connection without completely removing the coating of the contact walls or the through-hole plating of the PCB. The flexibility of the connections enables excellent performance in the event of temperature fluctuations, shocks and vibrations. The integrity of the coating ensures a long service life.
The connection is gas-tight, but the coating and the metal cylinder are permanently damaged. The PCB material is attacked in the immediate vicinity of the hole. High risk of metal detachment in the immediate vicinity of the through-hole plating.
Gas-tight connection, but the coating on the contacts and the walls of the through-holes is removed during insertion due to the high frictional forces. This can lead to cracks in the PCB near the holes and the connections can be sensitive to high temperature fluctuations, shocks and vibrations.
