Backshells from HARWIN — Providing mechanical and EMC protection for the product range of high-reliability connectors and cables

MSA Components can offer our customers a wide range of backshells made from a rugged, electroless nickel plated aluminum alloy through our supplier HARWIN. The aluminum backshells provide a strong yet lightweight protective cover with excellent shielding properties due to its high conductivity and excellent strength-to-weight ratio. The nickel coating provides corrosion resistance that is often lacking in uncoated aluminum.

The range of backshells includes cable and PCB/panel mounts available for all major ranges of HARWIN high reliability connectors. All metal backshells are rated for the operating temperature of the product family. Some options can be added later in the design process, even after the assemblies are fully assembled.

Why use backshells? - An Introduction

Backshells provide mechanical protection for the connectors, especially where the wires exit the connector. The use of metal provides additional EMC/RFI shielding within the backshells. By adding a metal braid around the outside of the cable assembly and attaching it to the rear ends of the backshells, a complete 360° EMC shielding is achieved over the entire cable assembly, as well as additional wear resistance at any point in the harness.

In addition, the mating connectors can be provided with metal housings on the PCB or in the electrical cabinet. This ensures complete end-to-end shielding. The backshells are also mechanically rugged. The heavy-duty metal braiding, properly anchored to the metal shells at both ends, helps reduce or eliminate the risk of short-circuits due to exposed conductors, so they are perfectly protected even in environments subject to vibration.

Features and benefits

  • Complete coverage of cable connectors and the cable exit from the rear of the connector
  • Adding braid covers the full cable assembly
  • Adding backshells on the board or panel mounted connectors gives complete end-to-end shielding
  • Great for mechanical robustness - prevents wear and tear on the connectors and cable bundle from any external impacts and fretting/rubbing
  • Added strength for maintenance cycles
