Selecting interconnects for space electronics means considering electrical transmission performance alongside mechanical demands. A compact interface needs to fit the equipment and carry the required data reliably. These requirements are central to our conversation with Scott Unzen of Omnetics Connector Corporation at Space Tech Expo Europe 2025.
Scott introduces the manufacturer’s Micro-D and Nano-D product families and explains its High-Speed Nano-D solutions. The discussion focuses on how contact density and signal integrity can be addressed within a small form factor.
Omnetics develops miniature interconnects for space, aerospace and defence, as well as selected industrial and medical applications. In the interview, Scott describes the shock, vibration and acceleration loads that relevant product variants are designed to withstand.
Flex Pin contact technology is a key part of the portfolio. Omnetics also offers QPL products under MIL-DTL-83513 and MIL-DTL-32139. The qualification and additional screening required depend on the specific configuration and application. The manufacturer’s qualification and screening information provides useful distinctions for selection.
Scott outlines two configurations for high data rates. The High Performance version uses increased contact spacing to support signal integrity. The High Density version prioritises contact density within a small form factor. Parallel pair wiring, also referred to as Twinax in the discussion, forms part of the interconnect concept.
Omnetics specifies up to 20 Gbps per differential pair for defined connector and cable combinations. Its High-Speed Nano-D brochure shows different results according to cable length and termination orientation.
The design-in discussion should therefore cover the complete connection, from the PCB termination through the connector to the cable. Required data rate, cable length and installation constraints provide the basis for selection. Together, they help establish which configuration suits the application.
The interview also covers straight and right-angle Micro-D connections for PCB mounting. These configurations allow the mating direction to be matched to the installation. Qualification documentation for the specific part number forms part of the selection process.
He also discusses the Kilo 360 portfolio. The K804 series includes compact circular push-pull connectors. The separately described Warrior series addresses Nett Warrior interfaces and is presented by the manufacturer as compatible with NATO STANAG 4695 systems. Intermateability needs to be checked for the particular configuration.
MSA Components supports the selection of suitable Omnetics interconnects and technical coordination with the manufacturer. Our Omnetics supplier page provides an overview. For a project discussion, useful inputs include interface requirements, data rate, cable configuration and the applicable environmental and qualification requirements.
Omnetics will be in Bremen as our co-exhibitor at Space Tech Expo Europe 2026 from 17 to 19 November. Take the opportunity to discuss your requirements directly with the Omnetics team.
