Thin residues from oils, lubricants or cleaning agents can remain on components after cleaning and affect subsequent steps such as coating or joining. At Space Tech Expo Europe 2025, Michael Pick of TREAMS GmbH explained how automated vacuum testing helps assess cleaned components before further processing.
VIDAM® uses vacuum-induced desorption to assess chemical film residues. The system analyses the substances released from the surface and reports the mass of the detected residue per unit area. The result can be compared with a cleanliness limit set for the next process step.
ARGAT® analyses the gas remaining in the vacuum chamber. It measures the composition of the residual gas and the outgassing rate per unit area for individual components or complete assemblies. The spectrum helps identify the released substances and trace their possible sources.
In space applications, released substances can deposit on colder surfaces and affect sensitive optics. The intended application and the conditions of the next process step determine which measurement is relevant to the assessment.
TREAMS also develops vacuum ovens for dry cleaning and bake-out. Its thermal vacuum chambers reproduce defined pressure and temperature conditions for investigating how assemblies behave in a simulated operating environment.
