An instrument’s optics must suit the application, the available space and the chosen sensor. At Space Tech Expo Europe 2025, Stefan Best explained how Sill Optics in Wendelstein develops custom laser and imaging optics and manufactures them to customer specifications.
Best describes single-unit production as an option for individual projects. Depending on the requirements, Sill Optics can develop an optical system with the customer or manufacture to an existing specification. The portfolio includes laser optics, telecentric lenses for machine vision and precision aspheres.
For an imaging system, aperture, field of view and wavelength range shape the optical design. Working distance, mounting dimensions and sensor format affect how the optics fit into the instrument.
In the interview, Best cites lens diameters from 8 to 500 mm. For larger lenses, glass selection, surface quality and the mechanical mounting also matter. Sill Optics lists satellite orientation, weather observation and environmental monitoring among the applications for its custom space optics.
Sill Optics will exhibit in Bremen again from 17 to 19 November 2026. The company’s event page provides details and a contact for meeting requests.
