A star tracker has to determine its orientation as a satellite moves. At Space Tech Expo Europe 2025, Can Bayraktar of TÜBİTAK UZAY explained how the institute tests its own star trackers on the ground. The setup shown in the interview includes two gimbals manufactured by NAUM Technology.
A star tracker images stars through an optical system. Its processing software matches the observed star positions to a catalogue and calculates the sensor’s orientation. The measurement provides a reference for the spacecraft’s attitude determination system.
Gimbals are pivoted assemblies that allow controlled rotation about defined axes. In a laboratory setup, the mechanics can reproduce angular positions and motion sequences. Engineers can then record the sensor response under known, repeatable conditions.
Bayraktar describes the division of work in the setup shown. NAUM Technology manufactured the two gimbals. TÜBİTAK UZAY uses them in the setup to test star trackers developed and manufactured by the institute.
NAUM Technology provides engineering and design services from concept through manufacturing. The example shows how custom mechanics support sensor development by providing the controlled motion a test sequence requires.
