How can procurement processes for specialized space hardware become faster and more accessible? At Space Tech Expo Europe 2025, we met Benedikt Borchert, Head of Business Development at Blackwave GmbH, to discuss standardized pressure vessels for space applications and a different approach to procurement.
Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs) are fiber-reinforced pressure vessels used in applications including launch vehicles and satellites. Based in Taufkirchen near Munich, Germany, Blackwave GmbH specializes in the development and manufacturing of COPVs for the space industry. What makes Blackwave’s approach particularly interesting is the combination of standardized products with a simplified procurement process.
Sourcing specialized components for space applications can involve lengthy procurement processes and extended lead times. Blackwave takes a different approach by offering a selection of COPVs directly from its standardized product portfolio. Through its dedicated platform, COPV.com, customers can select suitable pressure vessels based on their technical requirements and initiate procurement online. In our interview, Benedikt Borchert explains how this approach can reduce delivery times from several months to just a few weeks. For companies working with demanding development schedules, improved access to specialized hardware can make a meaningful difference.
