MSA Components is expanding its offering with solutions from VORAGO Technologies. Working together with our team colleagues at Hi-Rel Solutions, we can now provide our customers with access to radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant microcontrollers and microprocessors for space, aerospace, defense and other mission-critical applications.
VORAGO develops semiconductor solutions for systems where radiation, extreme temperatures and demanding reliability requirements determine component selection. The portfolio is based on Arm® architectures and covers different control, data-processing, interface and computing requirements.

One of VORAGO’s core technologies is HARDSIL®. This patented technology uses targeted semiconductor process modifications to make commercially designed devices more resilient to radiation and extreme operating conditions.
VORAGO offers both radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant product variants. This allows developers to select components according to the mission profile, radiation environment, required processing performance and project-specific reliability requirements.
The VORAGO portfolio includes several product families for different tasks within mission-critical systems.
The VA4 family is based on the Arm® Cortex®-M4. It includes radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant variants for control, monitoring and communication tasks.
Depending on the selected device, available functions include analogue peripherals and interfaces such as Ethernet, CAN and SpaceWire. The family addresses applications including satellite systems, scientific instruments, motor control and payload operations.

The VA5 family uses dual Arm® Cortex®-M55 cores. It addresses applications with higher processing, control, security and fault-resilience requirements.
VORAGO offers radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant versions of the family. The appropriate variant and interfaces must be evaluated against the specific mission and system requirements.

The VA7230 is a radiation-tolerant microprocessor for edge-computing applications in space. It combines dual Arm® Cortex®-A72 cores with an integrated 3D GPU and multiple high-speed interfaces.
This makes the processor suitable for applications including on-board computing, image and sensor-data processing, autonomous navigation and other computing-intensive tasks within satellite platforms and payloads.

The appropriate component depends on factors including:
• orbit and expected radiation environment
• required Radiation Hardness Assurance
• operating temperature range
• processing and memory requirements
• required communication interfaces
• package and qualification requirements
• planned mission duration
Selecting a component solely based on the term “radiation-hardened” or “radiation-tolerant” is therefore not sufficient.
